Learn how to upgrade Python 3.6 to Python 3.7 or 3.8 on Mac OS.

1) Open up Python official download site. It looks something like the image below. Press Download Python 3.7.4(release date was July 8, 2019) or Download Python 3.8.0(release date was Oct. 14, 2019) or the version you would like to download.

Go to the Python website's download page. It should auto-detect that you're on a Mac and offer you some options. You're probably wanting 3.4.1. The interesting part of the page will look something. Mac OS X 10.8 comes with Python 2.7 pre-installed by Apple. If you wish, you are invited to install the most recent version of Python 3 from the Python website ( ). A current “universal binary” build of Python, which runs natively on the Mac’s new Intel and legacy PPC CPU’s, is available there. Enumerating the changes in the detailed release notes, the developers write that “As of 3.9.1, Python now fully supports building and running on macOS 11.0 (Big Sur) and on Apple Silicon Macs.

2) Use the download installer to install Python 3.7. You can refer to How to Install Python3 article for more information.

I am running mac OS Catalina. When running $ Python3 -version, I see I have Python 3.6.5 installed. But, on the Python website, I can see that Python 3.8.4 is the latest version. How do I update to this version? Is there a way for it to automatically be updated as they release new versions going forward? I successfully installed Python version 3.7.7 via Homebrew on my Mac laptop with OS Catalina installed.

If you use Homebrew, you can run brew install command to update Python to Python 3.7

Verification

After you install, python3 command will point to Python 3.7. You can verify by using commands below.
